We are still watching the trademark registrations and we have noticed that as of 27 Jul 09 the UFL has now registered “Florida Tuskers”. It certainly seems like the “Tuskers” name is continuing to stick as a moniker for the Orlando Team.
All of this speculation should come to an end soon as the League has said they would announce the team names in the first week of August. Excellent!

Sports Illustrated has published a great article about the UFL. Check it out!
Gimmickry was the common thread among the upstart—and failed—pro football leagues of recent decades. The USFL blazed new trails in gaudy uniform design and with a spring-summer schedule. The Arena League (now on hiatus) took the game indoors. The XFL introduced the world to Huddle Cams, scrums for possession instead of coin tosses and a cartoonishly violent game that dispensed with unnecessary roughness penalties and fair catches.

First let me say that there is no way that Michael Vick will be playing in the UFL.
Yesterday ESPN’s Jeffri Chadiha reported that he felt that the UFL was a good move for Michael Vick:
The newly formed United Football League should be an appealing option for him as well. Even if it means he has to compete against lesser talents, Vick would be able to show us something about his current ability — and he’d easily have a better chance of being a full-time quarterback in that league. If Vick proved he still could be a playmaker after a few games in the UFL, you could expect NFL teams to be far more willing to pursue him. If he also had a chance to see how protesters reacted to him in that league, he’d also give NFL decision-makers a means for gauging what kind of public-relations fiasco they’d be dealing with by signing him.
There would be no shame in such a move. The most important thing Vick needs at this point is a large corporate entity that is willing to invest in and support him. The UFL reportedly could offer him as much as $1.6 million to play six games this season. A deal like that means Vick could be the face of that league, which starts play on Oct. 8. If his UFL team did not make the playoffs, he could be available to play as early as mid-November.
At the same time there are rumours that the New England Patriots will sign Michael Vick to a contract very soon. If this happens Michael Vick will likely wait out his suspension, work out and practice on his own and get ready for his big game day return. You have to think that he does not want to play in a “minor” league and will avoid it at all costs, despite what the media is telling him to do.
We would love to see Michael Vick play in the UFL, but we aren’t going to lose any sleep over it. The league will survive and thrive without him, that is something we already know.

According to the UFL they will reveal the uniforms for their inaugural teams – Orlando, San Francisco, New York and Las Vegas at press events on 4-5 Aug 09.
Official team names are also scheduled to be revealed the first week of August. Of course, unless they league will manage to change their minds in the next week or so, we already know what the team names will be.
From what we can tell, the consensus is that they are good names. The league seems to have done their homework on the names and they have thought things through. Of course, some of the fans were initially taken aback by the choices, mainly because the names are kind of different and unique. But there is no reason that any fan should be so terrified of the unknown. Just throw another hamburger on the hibachi and enjoy some FOOTBALL!
Are you getting excited yet?

Chris Hayes of the Orlando Sentinel had the chance to confirm the new team names with the league earlier today. In their response they did not confirm or deny the names:
“There are many great potential names for UFL franchises and we are doing our due diligence in narrowing down the choices. We recently filed multiple trademarks per market to further narrow down the selections,” said UFL spokeswoman Rachel Gary on Sunday night. “We plan to announce our names in the next two weeks and until that time, all names being circulated are merely speculative.”
Obviously we will have to wait a couple more weeks for the league to make it official and hopefully release the logos and colors as well. However, despite the early release and rumors about their team names the UFL should be happy that there is such interest in their league.
As well in the article, Chris Hays has informed us as to the meaning of the word “Tusker”:
“A Tusker is a wild boar, many of which roam wild throughout the everglades and the state of Florida. Apparently the league did extensive historical research to come up with the names.”
That’s great! Now what exactly is a Rockfish?

The UFL has recently registered their chosen team names as trademarks. It won’t be long before they officially release the names to the public.
New York Sentinels: This is a cool name. Kind of like security and safety. It brings thoughts of Batman watching over Gotham City.
San Francisco Rockfish: Is a fish a cool name for a football team? What about the Miami Dolphins? Of course a dolphin is technically not a fish but you get the point.
Orlando Tuskers: I don’t get it? I guess the mascot could be a pachyderm. As long as the animal rights people don’t take this the wrong way it could work.
Las Vegas Locomotives: Everybody was thinking of the gaming industry, but the league went in a different direction. What do you think of the “Locos” as a nickname. That is what the league has in mind.
Drumroll please… here are the names of the four UFL franchises that will hit the field this coming fall:
LAS VEGAS LOCOMOTIVES
ORLANDO TUSKERS
NEW YORK SENTINELS
SAN FRANCISCO ROCKFISH
What do you think?

With J.P. Losman signing with Las Vegas of the UFL there is a buzz in sports circles about the new league. Some say that the signing gives the league instant credibility.
Certainly the signing does mean that there will be some better than average players hitting the field this fall in the UFL. This does provide an air of credibility, but we might have to wait a couple of games into the first season to see if the gamble pays off.
However, at the moment, Losman is the UFL’s marquee player and Las Vegas Head Coach Jim Fassel is pretty excited for Losman:
“Listen, if he’d have went back to the NFL and sat on the bench this year, then he’d have been no better off next year. Whatever anybody thought about him, they’d still say the same thing. Nothing would’ve changed. … Instead, you go in this league and you play. The risk you take is you don’t play well. But if you’re an aggressive person, you say ‘I’m going to play well, people are going to see me, and maybe I can erase some of those negatives that were in the past, and a lot of people will say, wow, look at him play now. He’s a new guy.’”
The whole idea is for Losman to play well in the UFL and then be courted by the NFL as a potential starter. Not bad for the player who wants to get off the bench and be a star in the NFL. But how does this give credibility to the UFL?

It sounds like Michael Vick will be reinstated into the NFL with a 4-game suspension. This means that he likely won’t play in the UFL, as the only think he needs is to find an NFL team to sign him.
What do you think? Will someone put him on their roster?
